To fulfill the rising demand for environmentally friendly products, an Antwerp-based coffee roaster has invested €3 million in a new production plant to produce coffee beans from only natural components. with the surroundings. The fully brewable coffee pieces are now being produced on a brand-new, cutting-edge production line by Belgian coffee roaster Beyers Koffie.

On October 12, 2022, the company put into operation a 3 million euro ($2.9 million) coffee bean production line with a 1,400 pad per minute output rate. Beyers Koffie estimates that 330 million cups of coffee will be produced annually.

Beyers Koffie is now switching its coffee pad production to compostable PLA filter paper after earlier this year producing home-brewed coffee capsules for Dutch supermarket HEMA. Since PLA filter sheets are composed entirely of natural components like corn and/or sugarcane, they can be discarded as part of a household green waste collection system.

Approximately half of the coffee that the roaster produces annually is produced by Beyers Koffie, which currently produces 1.4 billion pieces annually. Beyers Koffie, an Antwerp-based company established in 1880, specializes in roasting coffee for other companies as well as numerous private brands for well-known stores including Hema, Carrefour, Lidl, Aldi, and Amazon.

The largest coffee roaster in Belgium has made investments in more environmentally friendly manufacturing methods over the past two years, including using industrial roasters to generate its own green electricity on the Puurs-Sint-Amends site. the installation of a separate water filtration system, as well as high-tech energy saving methods that account for all CO2 emissions produced during coffee roasting.
