In addition, for many years now, the EU, including Spain, has maintained the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) mechanism for developing and underdeveloped countries, including Vietnam.

From August 1, 2020, to July 31, 2022 (within two years from the effective date of EVFTA), enterprises are entitled to two preferential tariff regimes under EVFTA and GSP. They are allowed to choose which offer is more suitable. In choosing GSP treatment, the Coffee must meet GSP’s rules and procedures for certification of origin; in selecting preferential treatment under the EVFTA, the Coffee must meet the EVFTA rules and guidelines for a birth certificate. From August 1, 2022, the GSP preferential tariff mechanism automatically terminates, and enterprises apply the preferential tariff regime under EVFTA. However, the EVFTA allows if the EVFTA tax is higher than the GSP tax, they will still be entitled to GSP tax. No matter which preferential tax rate is chosen, the Coffee must meet the EVFTA rules and procedures for origin certification.

Vietnamese coffee is gaining advantages in the Spanish market

The Ministry of Industry and Trade said that in October 2018, the domestic price of Robusta coffee increased in line with the global coffee price. On October 30, 2018, the cost of Robusta coffee rose from 7.1 to 8.8% compared to the end of September 2018.

Regarding export categories, in September 2018, Robusta coffee exports increased by 56.3% in volume and 15.9% in value over the same period in 2017, reaching 105,685 tons, worth $165.39 million. . Accumulated in the first nine months of 2018, Robusta coffee exports reached 1.23 million tons, worth US$2,142 billion, up 27% in volume and 4.4% in value over the same period in 2017. The average export price of Robusta coffee in 9 months of 2018 reached 1,741 USD/ton, down 17.8% compared to 9 months of 2017. Meanwhile, the average export price of processed coffee increased by 9.7%, reaching 5,300 USD/ton.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade said that Spain’s coffee imports from Vietnam increased sharply. In contrast, imports from other major markets decreased, making Vietnam’s coffee market share in Spain’s total imports increase. From 36.7% in 7 months of 2017 to 45.6% in 7 months of 2018. Meanwhile, Brazil’s coffee market share in Spain decreased from 14.5% to 12.8% in 7 months. May 2018.
