Characteristics of Yirgacheffe coffee

Most Yirgacheffe coffee is usually hand-picked in the high mountains above the town of Sidamo. Then undergo wet processing, soaking for up to 72 hours in a fermentation tank. This processing method is more commonly used in Latin American countries, helping to create richly flavored kernels with a strong floral aroma.

As we all know, Ethiopia is the first place where you found and used the coffee plant, in which some documents even claim that the Yirgacheffe area is the origin of coffee, although there is some debate on the matter.

Coffee production in Yirgacheffe

The town of Yirgacheffe (Irgachefe) is located in the Sidamo region of Ethiopia at an altitude of about 1,900 meters above sea level. Farmers in the coffee town of Yirgacheffe are usually members of the Yirgacheffe Farmers Cooperative Union (YCFCU), which consists of 23 different member cooperatives, comprising more than 40,000 farmers. YCFCU members are exempt from the Ethiopian Coffee Exchange (ECX), allowing them to bypass the exchange and receive premiums from trade certifications such as  Fairtrade coffee  . and Organic coffee (certified organic coffee).

Some Yirgacheffe farmers are also members of the Oromia Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (OCFCU), which usually consists of small farmers from the Oromia region of Ethiopia. The cooperative will unify handling, grading, and sales techniques allowing the coffee to reach the market more efficiently and have more control over the reputation of Ethiopian coffee. OCFCU also helps stabilize farmers’ economies by spreading payments throughout the year.

What makes Yirgacheffe coffee famous?

Originally, Ethiopia was too famous in the world coffee village when it was considered the birthplace of coffee with indigenous Arabica varieties not found anywhere else in the world. Precious genetic resources and biodiversity make up the reputation and the unique flavor for each indigenous coffee (single-origin coffee) from Ethiopia.

In addition to their rare genetic properties, the coffee trees in Yirgacheffe are grown at an altitude of 1,700 to 2,200 meters above sea level. The unpretentious height of this region has allowed the coffee plant to reach the optimum growth rate of Strictly High Grown (SHG). Conditions help coffee trees grow slowly, prolong the fruiting time to accumulate nutrients for coffee beans, and develop the best flavor).

Retail experts recommend that Yirgacheffe preferably a Medium Roast to let its soothing qualities shine through and enhance the coffee’s fresh acidity.
