Description of Caturra coffee tradition

Caturra coffee is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee variety, which causes the plant to be shorter than usual (dwarfism). From the original natural transformation, the Caturra variety has continued to be selected by the Brazilian Institute of Agronomic –  Agronomic Institute of Campinas (IAC for short).

In other documents, Caturra coffee is a mutant of Bourbon, found near Caturra, Brazil, in the 1930s. Although born in Brazil, Caturra is now less common in Brazil but more common in Colombia, Costa Rica, and Brazil. Nicaragua.

CATURRA

This variety gives high yield and good quality but needs careful care and fertilization. Catura has a short, thick stem that is heavily branched. Its leaves are large and curly at the edges like Bourbon. Caturra adapts to many environments but grows best at altitudes of 1500 to 5500 feet with an annual rainfall of 2500 to 3500 mm. At higher altitudes, the quality will be higher. However, the yield will decrease.

The Caturra tree is short and is considered a dwarf coffee variety. Its quality is excellent. The taste is sour, medium body, intense aroma, and sweeter than purebred Bourbon.

In 1937, the IAC received samples of coffee seeds originating from the border of the states of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo. These are the red Caturra and the yellow Caturra. These two cultivars are derived from the natural mutation of Bourbon red. IAC selected and put into practice in 1949 then spread to Colombia and Costa Rica

The process of population selection has selected Caturra coffee trees with high cultivation efficiency over many generations, then continued to breed between these trees. Now Caturra has become popular in Central America.

Characteristics and distribution of Caturra

It should be emphasized that the origin of the Caturra coffee tree is a natural mutation from the 100% Bourbon variety, so it fully inherits the advantages of yield and quality of Bourbon coffee beans. When cultivated in areas higher than 1000m Caturra for early harvest with high yield, When combined with favorable conditions such as fertile arable land good care, Caturra coffee is a potential representative for Specialty Coffee.

Caturra is very popular in Latin American countries, typically Colombia. The red Caturra variety accounts for about 70% of the coffee cultivated area in Costa Rica with more than 80%.

In addition, Caturra is also known to be one of the “parents” of the Catimor family (a group of many breeds sharing genetic characteristics). This is a group of species that were bred between the Timor Hybrid (with disease resistance) coffee leaf rust) with Caturra to create a dwarf coffee family with strong rust resistance.

Examples of Catimor varieties include Costa Rica 95CitisicLempira, and IHCAFE 90.
